How to Connect to a Forex VPS from a Mac (2026 Guide)

How to Connect to a Forex VPS from a Mac (2026 Guide)

If you trade from a MacBook or iMac, you have probably already found out that MetaTrader was built for Windows. Running MT4 or MT5 directly on macOS is possible, but it usually means a compatibility layer, the occasional crash, and a Mac that has to stay awake all night for your Expert Advisors to keep working. A Windows forex VPS solves all of that. Your trading platform runs on a Windows server in a data centre, close to your broker, and your Mac simply becomes the screen and keyboard you use to check on it.

The good news is that connecting from a Mac takes about five minutes, and you only have to set it up once. This guide walks you through every step using Microsoft’s free Windows App, then covers the parts most guides skip: getting the display to look right on a Retina screen, moving files from your Mac to the VPS, Mac keyboard shortcuts, and fixing the most common connection errors.

What You Need Before You Start

Before you open any app, have these three things ready. They are all in the welcome email you receive after ordering a VPS, and you can also find them in your client area.

  • The VPS IP address. This is the address of your server, for example 203.0.113.25.
  • The username. On Windows servers this is usually Administrator.
  • The password. Copy it exactly. RDP passwords are case-sensitive, and it is easy to confuse similar characters such as l, I and 1.

You also need a Mac with an internet connection and access to the Mac App Store. Any reasonably recent version of macOS works; the App Store listing shows the current minimum version.

If you have not ordered a server yet, compare the Cheap Forex VPS plans first. Every plan runs Windows Server and comes with its own dedicated IP address, which you will need for the steps below.

Step 1: Install Windows App (Formerly Microsoft Remote Desktop)

Microsoft’s official remote desktop client for Mac used to be called Microsoft Remote Desktop. In 2024 Microsoft renamed it to Windows App, and the old app was replaced in the Mac App Store. If you search for “Microsoft Remote Desktop” today, you will land on Windows App. It is the same tool with a new name and a refreshed interface, and it is still free.

  1. Open the App Store on your Mac.
  2. Search for Windows App and check that the publisher is Microsoft Corporation.
  3. Click Get, then Install.
  4. Open Windows App from your Applications folder or Launchpad.

The first time it opens, Windows App may ask for permission to use your microphone, camera or other devices. You can decline all of these; none of them are needed for forex trading.

Step 2: Add Your VPS as a PC

Windows App can connect to several kinds of remote computers, including Microsoft’s own cloud desktops. For a forex VPS you want a standard remote desktop (RDP) connection, which Windows App calls a “PC”.

  1. Click the + button at the top of the window and choose Add PC.
  2. In PC name, enter your VPS IP address.
  3. Under Credentials, choose Add credentials and enter the username and password from your welcome email. If you share your Mac with someone else, choose Ask when required instead, so the password is not stored.
  4. In Friendly name, type something you will recognise, such as “London Forex VPS”. This is useful if you later run more than one server.
  5. Leave Gateway empty. A gateway is only used in corporate networks.
  6. Click Add.

Your VPS now appears as a tile in the Devices list. You will not need to repeat these steps again unless your IP address or password changes.

Step 3: Adjust the Display Settings Before Your First Connection

Most Mac users who complain that their VPS “looks blurry” or “has tiny text” have simply left the default display settings in place. A minute spent here makes the VPS far more comfortable to use.

Right-click your VPS tile and choose Edit, then open the Display tab.

  • Optimize for Retina displays. On a Retina screen this produces very sharp text but makes everything small, because Windows renders at full pixel density. If MT4 charts look tiny, turn this off, or keep it on and increase the scaling inside Windows (Settings, then Display, then Scale).
  • Start session in full screen. Full screen is comfortable on a large external monitor. On a laptop, many traders prefer a window they can move aside.
  • Update the session resolution on resize. Turn this on so the Windows desktop adjusts automatically when you resize the window, instead of showing scroll bars.
  • Use all monitors. If you have two or more screens and want MT4 charts across all of them, enable this. Note that it makes the whole session span every screen.
  • Colour quality. Lower colour depth uses less bandwidth. If you often connect over mobile data or hotel Wi-Fi, a lower setting keeps the session responsive.

Step 4: Connect and Accept the Certificate

Double-click your VPS tile to connect. The first time, you will see a warning that the certificate could not be verified. This is normal for a VPS: Windows servers use a self-signed certificate for remote desktop connections, and your Mac has never seen it before.

Check that the name in the warning matches your server, then click Continue. You can tick the option to always trust this certificate so the warning does not appear again.

After a few seconds, you will see the Windows Server desktop. That desktop is your VPS. Anything you install and run here keeps running in the data centre, even after you close Windows App or shut down your Mac.

Step 5: Install MT4 or MT5 on the VPS

Now that you are connected, open a web browser inside the VPS (not on your Mac), go to your broker’s website, and download their MetaTrader installer. Installing it inside the VPS is what makes your platform run around the clock. Our guide on how to install MT4 on a VPS step by step walks through the installation, logging in to your account, and attaching your Expert Advisor. If you trade on MetaTrader 5, see whether you can run MT5 on a cheap forex VPS.

How to Move Files from Your Mac to the VPS

Sooner or later you will want to copy an Expert Advisor (.ex4 or .ex5 file), an indicator, or a set file from your Mac to the VPS. Windows App gives you two easy ways to do this.

Option 1: Folder redirection (best for regular use)

  1. Disconnect from the VPS, then right-click its tile and choose Edit.
  2. Open the Folders tab and enable Redirect folders.
  3. Click + and choose a folder on your Mac, for example a folder called “VPS Transfer” on your desktop.
  4. Save and reconnect.

Inside the VPS, open File Explorer and click This PC. Your Mac folder appears under “Redirected drives and folders”. Drag files from it into the MT4 data folder (in MT4, click File, then Open Data Folder, then MQL4, then Experts).

Option 2: Copy and paste (best for single files)

With clipboard redirection enabled (it is on by default), you can copy a file in Finder and paste it into a folder on the VPS. This works well for small files. For large files or many files at once, folder redirection is more reliable.

For more methods, including what to do when copy and paste stops working, read how to transfer files to a forex VPS with RDP.

Mac Keyboard Shortcuts on a Windows VPS

The VPS runs Windows, so it expects Windows shortcuts. Windows App translates the most common Mac shortcuts for you, but not all of them. These are the ones traders use most:

  • Copy and paste. Command+C and Command+V usually work. If they do not, use Control+C and Control+V.
  • Right-click. Use a two-finger click on the trackpad, or Control+click.
  • Delete forward. Mac laptops have no Delete key in the Windows sense. Use Fn+Delete.
  • Switch apps. Command+Tab switches apps on your Mac, not inside the VPS. To move between programs inside the VPS, click them on the Windows taskbar.
  • Task Manager instead of Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete on a Mac keyboard does not reach the VPS reliably. To open Task Manager, right-click the Start button inside the VPS and choose Task Manager.

You can review how keys are mapped in Windows App, under Settings, in the Keyboard section.

Disconnect, Never Sign Out

This is the single most important habit for any trader using a VPS. When you are finished checking your trades, close the Windows App window or choose Disconnect. This leaves your Windows session running in the background, with MT4 and your EAs still trading.

If you click Start, then Sign out inside the VPS, Windows closes every program in your session, including MT4. Your EAs stop until you log in again and restart them. Shutting down or putting your Mac to sleep is completely safe; it only ends the connection, not the session on the server.

Troubleshooting Common Mac Connection Problems

“We couldn’t connect to the remote PC” or error 0x204

This is the most common error on Mac. It means Windows App could not reach the server at all. Check, in this order:

  1. The IP address is typed correctly, with no extra space at the end.
  2. The VPS is running. If you recently restarted it, wait two or three minutes.
  3. Your own network is not blocking remote desktop. Some office, hotel and public Wi-Fi networks block port 3389. Try connecting from your phone’s hotspot to test this.
  4. If none of these help, contact support with the exact error message.

“Your credentials did not work”

Retype the password manually instead of pasting it, because hidden spaces are a frequent cause. Make sure the username is exactly as given in your welcome email.

Text and charts look tiny or blurry

Change the Retina and scaling settings described in Step 3. Blurry text usually means Retina optimisation is off and the session is being stretched; tiny text means it is on without Windows scaling.

The session feels slow or laggy

Remote desktop speed depends on the connection between your Mac and the VPS, not on how fast your trades execute. Lower the colour quality, close unused browser tabs inside the VPS, and avoid streaming video over the connection. If the VPS itself feels slow, see why your forex VPS is running slow and how to fix it.

Why Use a VPS Instead of Running MT4 on Your Mac?

Running MetaTrader natively on a Mac works for occasional manual trading. For automated trading, it has real drawbacks:

  • Your Mac must stay on and awake. If the lid closes, the battery dies, macOS installs an update, or your home internet drops, your EA stops.
  • Distance to your broker. Your home connection may be 50 to 150 milliseconds from your broker’s server. A VPS in the same city as the broker can be 1 to 2 milliseconds away, which reduces slippage on entries and exits. You can check the figure for your own broker on our broker latency page.
  • Compatibility. MetaTrader for macOS runs through a compatibility layer, and some custom indicators and DLL-based EAs behave differently or not at all. On a Windows VPS, they run exactly as the developer intended.

If you mainly trade by hand, you may not need a VPS at all. Our article do you need a VPS for manual forex trading? explains when it helps and when it does not.

Security Tips for Mac Users

  • Use Ask when required for credentials if anyone else uses your Mac.
  • Keep Windows App and macOS up to date through the App Store.
  • Change the default VPS password to a long, unique one, and store it in a password manager.
  • Never share your VPS login with signal sellers or account managers. If you trade a prop firm account, sharing access can also break the firm’s rules.

Choosing the Right VPS for Mac Traders

Your Mac does not affect which VPS plan you need. What matters is how many terminals and EAs you run and where your broker’s servers are. As a rough guide, each MetaTrader terminal uses around 1 GB of RAM, so a single terminal fits comfortably on the Lite plan, while several terminals need more memory. Our guide on how much RAM MT4 needs on a VPS goes into more detail.

For location, pick the data centre closest to your broker: London for most European brokers and New York for many US-connected brokers. Our guide on how to choose the right VPS location for your broker explains how to check this in a few minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect to a Windows VPS from a Mac for free?

Yes. Windows App, Microsoft’s official remote desktop client, is free in the Mac App Store. You only pay for the VPS itself.

Is Windows App the same as Microsoft Remote Desktop?

Yes. Microsoft renamed Microsoft Remote Desktop to Windows App in 2024. It still makes standard remote desktop (RDP) connections to Windows servers, which is exactly what a forex VPS uses.

Will my EA keep running if I close my MacBook?

Yes, as long as you disconnect rather than sign out. Closing the lid, shutting down the Mac or losing your internet connection only ends the remote desktop connection. MT4 and your EAs keep running on the VPS.

Can I use an iPhone or iPad as well as my Mac?

Yes. Windows App is also available for iPhone and iPad. Add the same IP address and credentials, and you will connect to the same running session. Android users can follow our guide on using a forex VPS on Android.

Do I need to install MetaTrader on my Mac?

No. MetaTrader is installed on the VPS. Your Mac only needs Windows App to view and control it. You can still install the MetaTrader mobile app on your phone to monitor trades.

Why does my Mac say the certificate cannot be verified?

Windows servers use a self-signed certificate for remote desktop. The warning simply means your Mac has not seen this certificate before. Confirm the server name matches your VPS and click Continue.

Can I connect to my VPS from a Mac and a Windows PC at different times?

Yes. You can connect from any device, and you will see the same session each time. If you also use Windows, see how to connect to a forex VPS from a Windows PC.
